Web sources to search for images

Do you need for images, graphics, pictures or clipart? Are you looking for free media? Don't you want infringe copyright?

Sometimes you just need to use generic search tools, sometimes you can find what you want by looking on dedicated web sites.

Here some pretty sources useful for your aims.

1) Google Advanced Image Search

Google has an interface for Advanced Image Search, there are a lot of options, I mainly use these filters:

  • size,
  • colors,
  • usage rights.

2) Tineye

Link: https://www.tineye.com/

"TinEye is a reverse image search engine. It finds out where an image came from, how it is being used, if modified versions of the image exist, or if there is a higher resolution version."

It's installable also as a Chrome plugin.

3) Picsearch

Link: http://www.picsearch.com/

Picserach is a service for searching images by keywords, it shows a great wall of results that you can refine by colors, size, orientation or type.

Doesn't offer any filter for licence or copyright.

4) Creative commons search

Link: http://search.creativecommons.org/

The search of CreativeCommons.org is a unique interface to scan thirteen sources, it works both as a closed repositories crawler (like Europeana or Wikimedia commons) that as agent for other search tools (like Google or Google Images).
Filters are minimal, their focus is on basic CC features:
  • also for commercial use,
  • editable.
Bonus: it doesn't work only for images but for music and videos too.
